Steven Gerrard admits Liverpool could do without their FA Cup replay with Everton — but the skipper is sure the club’s march to Wembley will continue if they match Sunday’s performance.
The Reds enjoyed 70 per cent of possession against their neighbours but couldn’t add to Gerrard’s second-half leveller, meaning the game ended 1-1.
The tie will now be settled at Goodison Park on Wednesday, February 4 — just three days after Liverpool’s crucial Premier League clash with Chelsea.
«If we go and play like Sunday, we’ll beat them,» said the skipper, who now has 15 goals this season. «They were worth a point in the league game but we dominated them second time around.
«It’s natural to be disappointed after that because we had the chances. We will just have to be a bit more clinical in front of goal and watch the set-pieces.
«I think we completely dominated the game — their goal was frustrating because we had worked on that.
«Both sides could do without the replay. We have just got to put in the same work-rate at Goodison and if we do we will beat them.
«I’m sure we can go there and win, we’ve done it before and we can do it again.»
On his own performance after a difficult week, Gerrard added: «I’m focused on my football, whatever else is going on. It’s not about me, it’s about the team. I might have scored but I’d rather be here without a goal, knowing we were in the next round.
«I’m happy with my performances. I’m a footballer, I’m focused on my football and will continue to show that.»

Steven Gerrard’s second-half equaliser earned a 1-1 draw with Everton to force a fourth round replay at Goodison Park next week. Here’s the best of this morning’s post-match reaction from the FA Cup clash.

Liverpool had all of the ball and were the only team committing players forward and actively trying to win the game, but stubbornness and defensive resilience also brings results and in these departments the visitors excelled. The contest between Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and Phil Jagielka and Lescott was as compelling as has been seen in a derby match for many a year. Liverpool’s captain was again in peak form and the goal he scored after being teed up by a wonderful Torres flick was the least he deserved for a second half display which full of verve and determination.

Liverpool have the sublime skill of Fernando Torres to thank for their continuing presence in the FA Cup. He even created an early chance for Jamie Carragher, who suddenly turned into Johan Cruyff with a magnificent dragback before shooting into the side-netting.

I think that we deserved to win. We had plenty of possession and had control of the game all of the time. They had just one chance in the first half and we made a mistake to let a goal in. Okay, we couldn’t win, but the reaction from all the players was very positive after the disappointment of the other day. It will be a different game in the replay. We played really well. It was a much better performance from the league match. We controlled the game and they only had one chance, but unfortunately they scored from it. We showed good character to come from a goal behind and I think that from our second-half performance we deserved to score more goals. Как раз в несколько сезонов ЛФК выигрывает у Манчестер Юнайтед, так и ЭнфилдХарт раз в полгода-то уж напишет.
Непреходящая ценность футбола состоит, в числе прочего, и в том, что события, разворачивающиеся на поле, с известной долей легкости проецируются и на то, что происходит вне его – той жизни, которая прямых ассоциаций с игрой не вызывает. Однако почти во всем можно найти аналогии, наткнуться на аллюзии, описать все происходящее в терминах, свойственных исключительно игре. Так, минувший год мне пришлось провести на чужом поле, в новом клубе и на непривычной позиции. Трофейный кабинет, победные традиции, вековая история, да и несравнимо более привлекательные “личные условия контракта” не могли не вскружить голову. Не останавливало даже то, что эти перемены застигли меня в том возрасте, когда только железные люди, вроде Сами Хююпия, подписывают продления действующих соглашений. И, подобно выскочке, перешедшему по сенсационному трансферу из середняка заштатного восточноевропейского первенства в супер-клуб элитного чемпионата, под конец первого сезона чаще ощущаю себя Дегеном, чем Торресом.
Порой смешивается все настолько, что за праздничным семейным столом, подводя итоги года, всерьёз размышляешь, какое событие было важнее: первые шаги сына, или гол Бабеля, после которого счет стал 2:1 и не изменился до финального свистка. И с ужасом ловишь себя на мысли, что это время, скорее всего, отпечатается в твоей жизни именно непередаваемой эйфорией, испытанной вечером 13 сентября. Потому что ходящего, а теперь уже бегающего и залезающего повсюду, куда нельзя-тебе-сказали-сколько-раз-повторять-бандит-эдакий наследника ты видишь каждый день, и никуда это от тебя не денется. Победы же, словно та энфилдская, над заклятыми, выдаются исключительно порционно. И следующая, случись она уже грядущей весной, не будет расцвечена предшествующим ей мучительным ожиданием.
Так и 19-й. Его ждем не как окончания школы, не как встречи с той единственной и неповторимой, не как выхода на пенсию, не как смерти, в конце концов. Потому что все это неминуемо и обязательно будет, и за всем, даже за физической кончиной, обязательно должно что-то последовать. Завоевание неуловимого чемпионства же, как порой кажется, совпадет с удачным (или наоборот) запуском адронного коллайдера: увидеть Джеррарда с кубком Премьер-Лиги над головой, и можно эту планету закрывать. Как отстаивать этот титул, какие будут еще победы, что произойдет с самим собой – не имеет значения, черная дыра там. Пусть даже кто-то наштампует после этого пять титулов подряд, обогнав Красных по общему числу и свергнув их с трона. Главное – дождаться сейчас и убедиться, что, отстаивая славную историю и достижения многих поколений, Короли не послушно отдали корону, простояв в стороне уже почти два десятилетия, а, словно герой коммунистической легенды Сальвадор Альенде, с автоматом в руках встречали посягающих на то, что принадлежит нам по праву.
Мы иссушены и обескровлены этим ожиданием. Даже тот, кто ступил на нелегкий путь Красного подвижничества, вдохновленный Истанбулом, ждет этой победы дольше, чем многие из тех, кому эту победу ковать. Есть среди нас такие, кто взвалил на себя крест суппорта тогда, когда из нынешнего состава ни один еще не пополнил ряды человеческого рода. Даже я сам, с учетом синеносого детства наших капитана и вице-капитана, страдаю и мучаюсь Ливерпулем дольше, чем кто-либо из команды. И потому кажется, что для нас все это важнее. И потому невыносимо слышать слова легионера-новобранца о том, что после нескольких недель в Мелвуде он проникся тоской по новой победе, по которой изнывает Мерсисайд. Заходимся в истерике: “Да что ты понимаешь? Чем ты можешь проникнуться? Ты, который несколько месяцев назад отмечал победу в чемпионате в компании совсем других одноклубников? Наша любовь страшнее ненависти. В который я понял, что не так страшно оказаться в чужой стране без крыши над головой, как получить смс о голе Павлюченко в компенсированное время. А поскольку и то, и другое уже пережито и испытано, то бояться уже нечего. Мы идём в 2009. От укрощения строптивого Интера до чудо-гола Кина на Эмирейтс, сквозь кубковые поражения от выскочек, вроде Барнсли и Челси, сквозь пропущенные на Энфилде мячи от Тевеса и Титуса Брамбла… Мы продолжаем идти, мы продолжаем ждать.

CARRA: WE ARE WHERE WE SHOULD BE

Jamie Carragher insists people shouldn’t be surprised to see Liverpool at the top of the Barclays Premier League — and he believes the team have the quality to stay there.
Ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Everton tonight Rafael Benitez’s side are two points clear at the summit, and the Reds number 23 insists the players will be giving it everything they have to try and bring title number 19 to Anfield this season.
«People keep talking about us being top of the league but that’s not a surprise to us,» said Carragher.
«We are Liverpool Football Club and we are where we should be. It’s been too long without the title and hopefully we can change that this season.
«Some of our younger supporters have never seen us win the title and the last time we did it I was an Everton fan!
«All the teams are taking points off each other and it’s a lot more competitive this year. I think it makes for a better league.
«There is a long way to go and we will see what happens. The best team wins the league and hopefully that will be us this season.»
Reflecting on Sunday’s 1-1 draw at the Emirates Carra added: «We are a bit disappointed not to have won the game because of the fact Arsenal went down to 10 men.
«To be fair when they were down a man they probably looked more dangerous while we looked less dangerous.
«At the start of the second half I really thought we were going to go on and win the game, but sometimes it’s more difficult to play against 10 men.»
Robbie Keane’s stunning equaliser was the ninth time this season that the Reds have come from behind to claim at least a point, and Carragher admits that is a great quality for a team to possess.
«For the last 15 months we are probably as hard a team to beat as anyone in this league.
«We are drawing a few games at the moment but we are still top of the table. We need to start turning those draws into wins but we are happy at the moment.»
ARSENAL 1-1 LIVERPOOL: THE VERDICT
Liverpool moved two points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League after a 1-1 draw against Arsenal. Here’s the best of the post-match reaction.

Liverpool have already taken seven points from away games at Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal and having also beaten Manchester United their return from big games is as healthy as anyone could have expected when the season got underway. When an equaliser was needed predictably, it was the former Spurs man Robbie Keane on his return to North London who took full advantage with a a sumptuous half volley soaring into the roof of the net. Keane was fully entitled to enjoy the moment.

Importantly for Liverpool they moved two points clear at the head of the Premier League and though they could relinquish that lead to Chelsea tonight, those predicting their demise before the turn of the year will be disappointed. As will suitors for Robbie Keane. Having been recalled after sitting out the previous two league games, Keane responded with a quite magnificent equaliser to silence the Arsenal fans.

Amid the chaos of Emmanuel Adebayor’s richly-deserved dismissal and Cesc Fabregas’s disappearance in tears with a knee injury the significance of Robbie Keane’s contribution was almost lost at the Emirates Stadium. Operating as a lone striker, he created one excellent chance for his captain before responding to a terrific goal from Robin Van Persie with a similarly impressive contribution. Keane displayed both great pace and great technique to hold off William Gallas and Johan Djourou before beating Manuel Almunia with a brilliant half-volley. It was a wonderful strike and a wonderful riposte, not only to the taunting Arsenal supporters but to those who considered his Liverpool career to be over before it had even started.

For me, it’s always nice to score against Arsenal especially as I’d been getting a little bit of stick before the goal. I suppose that was always going to happen with me being a former Tottenham player so it was sweet for me to score against them. «Арсенал» и «Ливерпуль» поделили очки на «Эмирейтс», более всего порадовав своих конкурентов по чемпионской гонке. Гений Робина ван Перси, несчастье Сеска Фабрегаса и беспощадность Говарда Уэбба – итог самого ожидаемого матча уик-энда.
Английская премьер-лига близится к экваториальной отметке: отчетная игра являлась последним в 2008 матчем представителей «большой четверки». Тему встреч на высшем уровне «Арсенал» и «Ливерпуль» закрыли достойно, выдав качественную игру с оголенным нервом и двумя очень красивыми голами.
Расстановка «канониров» угадывалась, в общем-то, заранее: единственное, что вызывало хоть какие-то сомнения – личность партнера Вильяма Галласа по центру обороны. Заявочный лист подтвердил: Йохана Джуру на данный момент предпочитают и Сильвестру и Коло Туре (думается, травма последнего тут – второстепенный фактор). А вот «Ливерпуль» немного неожиданно амнистировал осевших было на лавке Даниэля Аггера и Робби Кина. Южноамериканская перестановка произошла в опорной зоне: Лукас Лейва подменил Хавьера Маскерано – аргентинца свалил вирус. 19-летнему Эмилиано Инсуа доверили роль левого защитника, с которой очевидно не справлялся в последних матчах Доссена. Наконец, руководил «красными» в этот вечер Сэмми Ли, подстраховавший испанского босса, восстанавливающего силы после операции.
Команды начали осторожно: «Арсенал» нащупывал игровой ритм, «Ливерпуль» выискивал шанс забросить мяч на шустрого Робби Кина. В какой-то момент план «красных» почти сработал: ирландец принял мяч спиной к воротам и выкатил под удар Джеррарду, но Стив с удобной для себя позиции жахнул прямо в Альмунию. Момент не такой уж острый и в отчете ему, по-хорошему, делать нечего, но это было лучшее, что команды произвели за 25 минут. На счастье, в составе «Арсенала» есть Робин ван Перси, пообещавший, кстати, в предматчевом интервью забить. Все началось с превосходной воздушной передачи Самира Насри. На то, чтобы преобразовать ее в гол, ван Перси понадобилось три касания. Раз – мяч обработан и сброшен вниз. Два – Робин отталкивает его от Каррагера. Три – четкий удар в ближний угол. Обещание выполнено, да как! Подобного гола не постеснялся бы и Деннис Бергкамп. Забив, «Арсенал» вошел во вкус и принялся делать то, что умеет лучше всего: удерживать мяч точными короткими передачами.
Одну из них незадолго до перерыва перехватил Аггер. Сложно понять, что затем предпринял датчанин – просто выбил мяч или расчетливо забросил его на ход фронтмену. В любом случае защита «Арсенала» рывок Робби Кина проспала, и легко сбежавший от Галласа и Джуру ирландец мощным ударом поставил точку – 1:1. А минутой ранее горчичник на ровном месте схлопотал Адебайор – рутинный, казалось, момент, которой, однако же, «Арсеналу» еще аукнется.
До конца тайма «Ливерпуль» успел профукать отличную возможность выйти вперед: трудяга Кюйт прорвался по правому краю и прострелил, но Стиви Джи шансом не воспользовался. Вторая половина началась для «Арсенала» на еще более грустной ноте: вынужденной замене подвергся Сеск Фабрегас (видимо, сказался жесткий стык с Алонсо). Не то чтобы испанец осветил «Эмирейтс» своей игрой в первом тайме. Но без него связывать полузащиту и атаку лондонцам стало куда тяжелее, чем не постеснялся воспользоваться «Ливерпуль», к 55-й минуте завладевший огромным территориальным преимуществом. А на исходе часа – еще и численным. Говард Уэбб и так не претендует на титул любимого арбитра болельщиков «Арсенала», но удаление посреди тайма Адебайора вообще обрекло его на свист трибун до самого финала.
Тут, по идее, «Ливерпулю» и брать игру в свои руки, и бежать добивать десять арсенальцев на их собственном поле. Вышло иначе – в первые несколько минут после удаления «канониры» взорвались активностью (видимо, двигало чувство несправедливости), а, успокоившись, начали обороняться четко и уверенно. Да, центр поля был у хозяев отобран, но «красные» в конечном счете за последние полчаса создали один опасный момент (с остроумного паса Эль Жара должен был забивать Кюйт), не сумев организовать даже пристойный навал.
В итоге – 1:1. Как «Ливерпуль», так и «Арсенал» итогом матча могут быть в равной степени недовольны. «Красные», оказавшись в выигрышной ситуации, так и не придумали, что с ней делать. Ну а «канониры» мало того, что сорвали хет-трик в играх с «большой четверкой», но и в очередной раз потеряли бесценные домашние очки (а, может быть, еще и своего капитана), отпустив «Астон Виллу» уже на три пункта. В общем, сегодня на «Эмирейтс» победила – нет, не дружба, а пара «Манчестер Юнайтед» (две радости за день) – «Челси».
Томмо: Победа будет за нами
Легендарный игрок «Ливерпуля» Фил Томпсон считает, что Красным вполне по силам обыграть мадридский «Реал» в 1/8 финала Лиги Чемпионов.
Томмо был капитаном команды в памятном финале Кубка чемпионов 1981 года, когда Красные обыграли «Королевский клуб» со счетом 1:0.
Бывший защитник «Ливерпуля» считает, что мадридцам не хватает стабильности, а с приходом нового главного тренера им потребуется некоторое время на то, чтобы притереться к игровому почерку Хуанде Рамоса. В тоже самое время Фил уверен в способности Рафы вывести свою команду в ¼ финала Лиги.
«Трудно говорить, что-то конкретное, потому что еще неизвестно в каком состоянии они окажутся в феврале. Играй мы с ними сейчас, то победили бы легче легкого, но до матча еще много времени и ситуация может измениться», — поведал бывший игрок «Ливерпуля».

Мадридский Реал — соперник Ливерпуля в 1/8 финала Лиги Чемпионов УЕФА
Чемпион Испании мадридский Реал стал нашим очередным соперником в Лиге Чемпионов.
Последний и единственный раз Ливерпуль встречался с Реалом в финале этого турнира 27 мая 1981 года в Париже на Парк де Пренс. Единственный гол, забитый Аланом Кеннеди за 9 минут до конца матча принес Ливерпулю третий Кубок Чемпионов.
Первая игра состоится в Мадриде на Сантьяго Бернабеу 25 февраля. Ответная на Энфилде 10 марта.
Робби Кин: А не спешите меня «хоронить»
Сегодня Робби Кин опроверг слухи о том, что он может покинуть «Ливерпуль» во время зимнего периода дозаявок. Игрок настаивает на том, что ещё слишком рано подводить итоги его выступлений на Энфилде.
Ирландский нападающий провёл на поле все 90 минут матча с ПСВ, в котором был одним из лучших в составе победителей, завоевавших первое место в группе D.
Несмотря на слухи, которые упорно отправляют игрока подальше от Энфилда (и это спустя лишь несколько месяцев после его приезда в Мерсисайд), Кин полон решимости остаться в команде и доказать свою состоятельность именно в качестве игрока Красных.

Риера забил мяч прекрасным ударом с 25 метров. Его гол вывел Красных вперёд в счёте, после того как в первом тайме Райан Бабель ответил своим голом на мяч брабантца Данко Лазовича.
Позже Нгог послал и третий мяч в сетку ворот соперников, однако именно мяч Риеры стал настоящим украшением матча, когда, посланный на высокой скорости, он вонзился в верхний угол ворот голландцев.

REDS SEE OFF PSV TO FINISH TOP
Liverpool have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions league as winners of Group D after Ryan Babel, Albert Riera and David Ngog found the net in a 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds went into this match at the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven knowing they had to better Atletico Madrid’s result against Marseille or win by more than two more goals than the Spaniards.
But Liverpool were assured of taking the top spot after Atletico could only managing a 0-0 draw at the Olympique Stadium in France.
The result means Rafa Benitez’s side will have the advantage of playing the second leg of the next round at fortress Anfield in February.
With both sides sizing each other up and keeping things tight, there were no real clear-cut chances in the first 10 minutes but a few flashes from the lively Ryan Babel hinted that there might be a few goals in this one.
Mascherano started off an attack within the first 90 seconds. The Argentine did what he does best picked up possession in the middle of the park before finding an outlet in the form of Ryan Babel. The Dutch forward, who had switched to the right flank for this match, tested the PSV rearguard with a jinky run, but he was stopped in his tracks by an alert Jeremie Brechet.
PSV soon took their opportunity to attack, however, and Nordin Amrabat earned a free-kick when Jamie Carragher took him down 25 yards out. But Diego Cavalieri made a confident start to the match by collecting the delivery.
Babel was at it again on 11 minutes and glided past Carlos Salcido and into the PSV penalty area, but his pass in search of Robbie Keane deflected off a defender and the Dutch side cleared the danger.
Amrabat caused more problems for the Reds’ defence when he sidestepped Jamie Carragher and laid off to midfield powerhouse Timmy Simons, who struck a fizzing shot which Cavalieri parried to safety. PSV’s main threat Amrabat tested Liverpool’s rearguard a matter of seconds later, and nearly found a way in behind — but eventually he found himself in a dead end and his touch let him down.
They might have made a tentative start to the proceedings, but PSV looked much more comfortable on the ball after the 15-minute mark and came close to finding a way in on a number of occasions.
Liverpool looked like they had started to contain the Dutch side, but they managed to break the deadlock on 37 minutes when Danko Lazovic took advantage of a lucky deflection from their first corner of the match.
The unmarked Lazovic pounced on the ball after a nasty richochet between and slotted home from close range and give the home side the lead.
Huub Stevens’ side had made the most of their first clear opportunity of the match. After plugging away at Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger for the first 30 minutes, they deserved to strike the first blow and were good value for their lead.
But Liverpool showed their mettle and equalised eight minutes later from an excellent Ryan Babel header.
Lucas Leiva put a pinpoint cross into the PSV penalty area for the Dutchman to head home on the stroke of half-time.
With the scores level at the beginning of the second half, both sides continued in the same formations as PSV looked to chip away, while Liverpool searched for gaps left in the home team’s defence.
But Liverpool soon gained the ascendancy and set about creating a string of scoring opportunities.
Keane nearly set David NGog away when he picked up the ball in the hole on 48 minutes, but the Irishman’s pass was half a yard too far for Ngog to reach.
The Irish marksman had made a particularly lively start to the second half and nearly got on the end of a low Ryan Babel cross into the penalty area in the 50th minute, while he also came close to finding his French striking partner inside the six-yard box with a typically deft through ball a matter of seconds later.
Babel reminded PSV left-back Carlos Salcido how dangerous he can be when cutting in from the right wing, and dragged a low drive a yard and a half wide just before the hour mark.
But PSV remained a threat at the other end and Alvaro Arbeloa came to the Reds rescue when he headed out for a corner three minutes later. The lofted cross was destined for the head of Lazovic, but the Spanish full-back rose to put the ball to safety.
And then Albert Riera produced something very special. Riera must have been well over 25 yards out when he let fly with a fierce left-foot shot to put Liverpool into the lead.
He might have been given time on the ball, but the Spanish winger couldn’t have hit it any sweeter and Andreas Isaksson in the PSV goal had no chance. What a strike.
With PSV needing something from this game to have a hope of qualifying for the Uefa Cup, Huub Stevens’ side were always on the look-out for a potential way through Liverpool’s back four, but as the game went on they left more and more gaps at the back for Liverpool to take advantage of.
David NGog scored his first goal for the first team on 78 minutes after a lapse in concentration from PSV. The French striker was let through on goal and slotted home to put the Reds 3-1 up.
The Liverpool boss gave Reserve team starlets time on the pitch towards the end of this Group D clash. Stephen Darby came on for Arbeloa on 70 minutes, Jay Spearing for Riera on 77, and Martin Kelly replaced Jamie Carragher on 81 minutes.
They might have took a considered approach throughout, but PSV really gave this one everything they had at times here, but in the end this Liverpool team had too much for them.
Babel, Lucas, Riera and Keane all put in impressive displays after receiving more than their fair share of flak in recent weeks to put the Reds into the last 16 as group winners. They will certainly be thankful of this result come February time.

Rafael Benitez today refuted claims that Fernando Torres will be out of action for longer than expected.

The Liverpool manager insists his Spanish striker continues to make good progress as he recovers from a hamstring injury sustained against Marseille on November 26.
«Fernando is progressing and improving so hopefully he will be back sooner rather than later,» the boss told Liverpoolfc.tv.
«It’s just a question of waiting and not pressuring the player. I was with him today and he was okay. He has a lot of confidence now, and when you have confidence, you can be fitter sooner.
«Everything is going well and I think it will be more or less the time we said before — maybe less.»
El Nino, who was ruled out for two to three weeks after the Marseille clash, was back in Spain this week to see a specialist about his hamstring problem.
The manager revealed it was a very beneficial trip.
«It was just to confirm our diagnosis was right and that is the case,» said the boss.
«The injury was a relapse of the one he had before. The specialist has known Torres for a long time and he also has a good relationship with our physios who are working hard with him.
«We are really pleased because we know the problem and now we can find a solution. We know we have to work hard on it and I think he’ll be okay.»
RESERVES PAY THE PENALTY IN ROVERS DEFEAT

Liverpool Reserves slumped to their fifth defeat of the season after going down 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers.
Gary Ablett’s men had hoped to build on their recent upturn in form against the Lancashire outfit but struggled to break down the visitors’ stubborn rearguard and were beaten by Alan Judge’s first-half spot-kick.
On what was a bitterly cold night at The Halliwell Jones Stadium the Reds created the first opening of note when Dani Pacheco fired a tame effort wide after a neat exchange of passes with Gerardo Bruna.
It would prove to be the highlight of the first 45 for Liverpool who dominated possession without finding the cutting edge to truly hurt the Rovers defence.
For their part, the visitors seemed happy to use the pace of their forwards on the counter-attack and gave a warning of their threat on 10 minutes when Marcus Marshall had a header ruled out for offside.
It was a brief respite for Liverpool and they fell behind seven minutes later when Emmanuel Mendy brought Aaron Doran crashing to the ground in the penalty area.
It was a poorly-timed challenge from the right full-back and his was duly punished in full when Alan Judge stepped up and lashed home the spot-kick to give the away side the lead.
The remainder of the half saw the home side continue to probe for the equaliser, but despite the presence of the returning Krisztian Nemeth in attack, the closest they came was when Mikel San Jose headed over Bruna’s corner on the stretch.
It was a similar story in the second period with little goal match action at either end, although Pacheco almost gave the 455 fans who had braved the winter chill something to cheer when he forced a fine save out of Mark Bunn with an inventive chip.
With time running out Ablett summoned Jordy Brouwer from the bench and he almost provided Pacheco with an opportunity with a clever flick, but the little Spaniard saw his shot deflected to safety.
At the other end, Peter Gulacsi had to be alert to keep out Julio Santa Cruz as Rovers threatened to double their margin of victory.
Deep into injury-time the Reds nearly nicked a point but no-one was on hand to steer home San Jose’s cut back after he was left unmarked at the far post.

KENNY DALGLISH: LET’S JUST ENJOY BEING TOP

A lot is being said and written about recent performances, but the important thing to remember and focus on is that we are top of the league table. Let’s enjoy it.
You always want to play well and you always want to win games, but the big thing is to take as many points from as many matches as you possibly can. This season there has only been one game where we didn’t take anything — away at Tottenham — so clearly the boys are doing their best.
You want to try and capitalise on any mistakes Chelsea make and, okay, we didn’t do that in the way we would have wanted against West Ham, but we still picked up a point and it could prove to be a big point at the end of the season.
I know it has been said over the last couple of weeks that the fans are nervous and anxious and that it might be affecting the players, but I don’t really go along with that way of thinking.
The top of the league is the best place to be, full stop. The players have to enjoy being where they are and get on with the job of staying there. If they keep winning games then nobody will overtake them, it’s as simple as that.
What you don’t want to be doing before games is thinking too much about the league table and league positions. You have to try and beat the opposition, you don’t want to have to try and beat yourself as well.
The league table isn’t an obstacle or a team to overcome and it shouldn’t be in the players’ minds when they take on Blackburn this weekend. You play against the opposition, not against the league table.
There is nobody above us at the moment and that is a fact to be enjoyed, not frightened of.
There’s no reason for anxiety among the fans either in any way, shape or form. We have made great progress during 2008 and have got ourselves into a position where we can really challenge for the Premier League title for the first time in many years. That’s not something to feel anxious about.
The players go onto the pitch before every game with every ambition to do as well as they possibly can, and the people go through the turnstiles wanting to support their team as well as they can. It’s much easier when both factions are together. If it’s not going right then you will get one or two groans — like against West Ham — but I’m sure those people went away for a pint with their mates after the game and said to themselves and others ‘we’re top of the league’.
It’s great to see us looking down on everyone else and no matter what you might think about performances or players, don’t lose sight of the fact that the boys have picked up more points than any other team this season and have beaten Chelsea and Manchester United along the way.
It’s shaping up to be a really interesting title race, with all of the main contenders having suffered a few problems already this season.
Kenny on being top

It’s hard to predict how results are going to go from week to week.
I mentioned in my column last month that fans have a habit of wanting to look four or five games into the future and try to predict what’s going to happen. If football was that simple to predict it would be a dull game.
People would have been looking at the fixtures a couple of weeks ago and saying we’ve got to play Fulham and West Ham at home and Bolton away so that was going to be a certain nine points. And here we are sitting with just five points from those three games.
Who’d have thought we’ve have dropped four points at home in our last two league games? Who’d have thought the top five wouldn’t be able to score a goal between them the previous weekend?
Football is full of surprises but it’s how you recover and react to setbacks which is important and Liverpool have to be positive.
We have to get over the disappointment of not beating West Ham and go and take three points away from Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon. If we do that then we stay top of the table with another game having been played.
It won’t be easy though because I’m sure Paul Ince will have them fired up for the match. They don’t seem to have a lot of luck going for them at the moment and they’re struggling for results, but I’m sure he can get them out of the trouble they find themselves in at the present time.
Incey has done brilliantly in his managerial career so far and it’s good to see him being given a chance in the Premier League. He did fantastically well at Macclesfield when people probably thought he was mad to take the job. He rescued them by keeping them up and then went and did an equally good job at MK Dons. It’s going to be tough for him at Blackburn — especially following in Mark Hughes’ footsteps there — but I’m sure he has the credentials to do well. He just needs a bit of luck.
From a personal point of view it’s always a special fixture when Liverpool go to Blackburn because I have very fond memories of my time at Ewood Park. The people of Blackburn are good people — I just wish both teams could win this weekend!
From a confidence and building a momentum point of view, it’s important to get the victory on Saturday as it would put us in good shape as we head closer towards the Christmas programme of games.
Although we’ve had one or two setbacks so far, I’ve seen nothing to change my pre-season opinion that this is the best chance we’ve had to go close to winning — or to win — the Premier League title.
I said that three or four months ago and I stand by it today. I just thought at the start of the season that we looked really strong all through the team and as the season developed and we beat Manchester United and Chelsea, it only strengthened my belief that we can do it this year.
Chelsea have been inconsistent, United haven’t been on fire and they’ve still got the World Club Championship match in Japan today which means they’ll fall behind with fixtures, and Arsenal are struggling to put any kind of run together.
We’re not losing many games, we’re not conceding many goals and we’re sat with more points than anybody else after 15 games. I just wish we could score a few more though because I have a feeling goal difference might prove to be very important this season and at this moment our tally is inferior to Chelsea’s.
With that in mind, we could have done without Fernando Torres suffering another injury, but if we don’t rush him back and if he can return fully fit and feeling fresh then he could have a terrific second half of the season for us.
There is still an awful lot to play for and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the boys can keep picking up the points and stay at the top of the table.
Believe me, it’s the best place to be.
ORRES: BALLON D’OR AWARD A BIG BOOST

Fernando Torres today insisted finishing third in the World Footballer of the Year awards will spur him on when he returns from injury.
Torres is currently recovering from another hamstring setback, with boss Rafael Benitez refusing to set a timescale for his star striker’s return.
But after only finishing behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in this year’s Ballon D’Or awards, the Spanish striker admits the recognition of his incredible debut year at Anfield has given him a massive confidence boost.
«The award is an important recognition,» he said. «It comes at a time when I am recovering from injury, and the accolade will spur me on.
«The injury is a bit worrying because it has happened to me before. Now the only thing to do is to get on with the rehabilitation and make sure that I come back when I am ready and not too soon. This prize is a massive reward that obliges me keep on working on my recovery.
«The year 2008 has been an extraordinary one for me, both on a personal and a team level. I would like to thank my team-mates from the Liverpool squad and the Spanish national team for their help.
«Their support was both important and necessary, and their contribution is one of the reasons why today, I can enjoy this amazing experience.»
As well as finishing third in the Ballon D’Or, Torres has made the FIFPro starting XI (pictured here at Melwood this morning receiving the award along with Steven Gerrard) and has also been nominated for the FIFA World Player award.
«This has been my best year as a professional footballer,» he admitted. «But my aim is to improve with every year that passes.
«I don’t look back, but set my sights on doing things right so that come 2009, I can be one of the candidates again, and so that next time, I can try and go one step further.
«The hardest part is not getting there, it’s staying there.
«Look at Gerrard. He has never won the award, and he deserves it as much as anyone, but he is always there with the best. My team-mate Stevie is the best role model there is.»
Torres added: «I adapted to English football easier than expected.
«We knew that, when I embarked upon this adventure, my style and attributes would adapt well to the demands of the Premier League.
«We made the right choice when it came to signing for Liverpool and playing in England.
«Last season we almost qualified for the Champions League final, and it was a shame that we didn’t make it all the way to Moscow.
«And as for Spain national team, what can I say? The trophy we achieved playing as a team has catapulted the players into a position where we are challenging for individual awards and prizes.»
AGGER: I STILL NEED TO IMPROVE

Daniel Agger today spoke of his contentment with life on Merseyside — but admitted he had yet to reach top form after returning from injury.

The Dane, who missed almost all of last season with a metatarsal injury, has enjoyed an extended run in the side since Martin Skrtel suffered cruciate ligament damage against Man City in October.
With Skrtel hoping to return this month, Agger knows he will have to be at his best to stay in the team.
«It’s difficult to compare to how I was before, and I know there are some things I need to improve, but I can feel myself getting better and better with every game,» the 23-year-old told Liverpoolfc.tv.
«Maybe I am not there yet, but I will be soon.
«Of course sometimes it’s difficult but you have to keep working hard to improve yourself and that’s what I am trying to do.
«It has been difficult with the injury last year but that’s the past. Hopefully I’ll be back to 100 per cent soon.
«Outside of the pitch I’m really happy. I am enjoying everything. The people in Liverpool are so friendly. I was really surprised when I came to the city how friendly the people were compared to other places I have been. I cannot complain about anything. I feel at home.»
Meanwhile, Agger described teammate Sami Hyypia as ‘the ultimate professional’ after the Finn climbed into Liverpool’s top 20 appearance list by playing his 454th game against West Ham.
«I can’t even say how big an achievement it is,» said Agger. «He is such a superb player and such a good professional. I can’t think of anyone else who deserves what he’s got more than him.
«He is the ultimate professional. If he’s not playing he helps others as much as he can and tries to guide people.»

The under-18s embark on their FA Youth Cup campaign in Leeds with some words of wisdom from the club’s vice-captain, who won the tournament in 1996 after victory over a West Ham side including Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.
Carra wants the youngsters to stand up and be counted — insisting he and Steven Gerrard won’t be able to fly the Scouse flag forever.
He said: «A lot of the football they play is local — just in the north. So it’s important to pit your wits against sides from all over. It’s cut throat as well, with it being a knockout competition. You get to see the character of the team.
«And it’s also their first chance to get a bit of fame because the final is on telly. That’s where it all started for me.
«Academy football is extremely important. We’d all like to see a few more coming through and I’m sure they will. Stephen Darby and Jay Spearing were superb in pre-season so hopefully they’ll be involved in the future.
«Hopefully some more will come through because me and Stevie won’t be here forever.»
Carra is one of four players from the 1996 side who went on to play top flight football alongside Owen, Jon Newby and David Thompson.
He added: «It was a very good side, but I think it was based more on character than skill. There were a lot of characters in the team. Michael Owen was obviously a big part of it but there were a lot of others with character.
«There were plenty of times when I thought I might not make it. You go through a lot of ups and downs as a youngster.
«You have heavy defeats, and then when you get in the reserves, sometimes you don’t get a kick because you’re up against older professionals. You wonder how you’re going to make it.
«I remember my first ever game for the B team — we lost 4-1 to Man Utd and I wasn’t in the game. But you’ve got to shrug it off and show the character to get through it. It’s not a bed of roses.
«There are no secrets. The important thing is to work hard and listen to your coaches — then you’ll give yourself every chance of becoming a professional footballer. Don’t cut corners on or off the pitch.
«If you make it then you’re good enough — if not, at least you can sleep well in the knowledge that you’ve given everything.
LIVERPOOL 0-0 WEST HAM: THE VERDICT

Liverpool went one point clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League table after a frustrating 0-0 draw with West Ham United. We’ve compiled the best bits from this morning’s post-match reaction.

If Liverpool fans began the night attempting to overturn a conviction, they ended it regretting the fact that conviction is the one thing their team does not currently have. While the protest in support of jailed Kopite Michael Shields hit the target, Liverpool were unable to do likewise as an opportunity to take firm control at the top of the league passed them by.

You are always disappointed when you don’t win your home games, and obviously we have not played as well as we could. We would have liked to get the three points and we certainly tried to get that but normally when you are not playing too well you go down the league. Instead we are going up the league when we are not at our best.

From the beginning to the end we tried to win and that’s why they had one or two counter-attacks in the second half. The team played much better than before and some players did too. People can be disappointed and we are too, but we are one point clear at the top. We didn’t play well against Fulham but in this game we had plenty of possession, passed and moved the ball, and had chances. If you play badly, don’t have chances and the other team is in control, you can be worried — but we were much better.

The problem with many people today is that we expect everything instantly — internet connections, fast food etc. The Premier League is won over nine months and 38 games, not in December. The good thing is we are top of the table. True, we are not playing well but after 15 games we have done better than anyone else and in recent years we have done better in the second half of the season, so there is a lot to be positive about.

HYYPIA CHASING GERRARD

Sami Hyypia moved into Liverpool’s all-time top 20 appearances list against West Ham on Monday night.
The veteran Finn, a bargain £2.5million signing from Willem II almost 10 years ago, played his 454th match for the Reds — and typically helped to keep a clean sheet.
Hyypia is now level with another legendary centre-back, Ron Yeats.
Steven Gerrard (459) and Jamie Carragher (546) are the only current Liverpool players with more appearances.
Hyypia’s 454 games include 309 in the Premier League, 67 in the Champions League, 28 FA Cup, 25 UEFA Cup, 19 in the League Cup and two each in the FA Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup and World Club Championships.
In all these games he has come off the bench just eight times.
The 35-year-old has faced Chelsea more than any other club, turning out against them 23 times.
ALVARO STRIKE WINS NOVEMBER AWARD

Alvaro Arbeloa’s stunning Kop end strike against West Bromwich Albion was voted Liverpool’s Goal of the Month for November by fans in an exclusive poll on the official website.
The Spanish right back’s first ever goal at Anfield was a very special moment for him, and he got 31 per cent of the vote.
In second place was Steven Gerrard’s header against Marseille (17 per cent), while Dirk Kuyt’s stunner at Tottenham came third with 14 per cent.

TORRES THIRD IN EURO AWARD

Fernando Torres was today voted third in this year’s Ballon D’Or behind Lionel Messi and winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
The prize — also known as European Footballer of the Year — was awarded in the early hours after a poll of 96 journalists by France Football magazine.
A total of 11 Barclays Premier League players earned votes, with Steven Gerrard tenth, Wayne Rooney 13th and Frank Lampard 15th.
Michael Owen is the only Liverpool player ever to collect the award.
