REDS OFF TOP AFTER SPURS LOSS
Liverpool slumped to their first defeat of the season after substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko struck a last-gasp winner for Spurs at White Hart Lane.
The Reds dominated throughout a one-sided contest but could not build on Dirk Kuyt’s third-minute opener and were made to pay for missing a whole host of chances as the home side snatched victory courtesy of a Jamie Carragher own goal and a stoppage time tap-in from the Russian.
It means Rafael Benitez’s side have slipped to second place in the table and ends their hopes of extending a 17-match unbeaten run.
Ahead of the kick-off Liverpool were replaced at the top on goal difference following Chelsea’s emphatic 5-0 win over Sunderland in their mid-afternoon clash at Stamford Bridge.
It was news that Rafael Benitez and his team obviously took great exception to, and they set about reclaiming their place at the summit of English football with a super-charged start to the proceedings.
Indeed, there were just three minutes on the clock when Rafa’s Reds took control, with the returning Robbie Keane playing an instrumental role in the opener.
The Republic of Ireland international turned brilliantly in the Spurs area before slipping the ball to Dirk Kuyt and he made no mistake with a ferocious strike that seared into the top corner from a tight angle.
It was the Dutchman’s sixth of the season and his fourth in the league meaning he has already surpassed his Premier League tally for last season.
Tottenham had gone into the match in buoyant mood following their sensational midweek comeback in the North London derby at Arsenal but the game could have been beyond them just two minutes later when Darren Bent turned a right-wing corner against the post.
At this point a second Liverpool goal looked on the cards but as the half wore on Spurs began to enjoy more possession and they could have levelled on 22 minutes when Vedran Corluka’s dangerous cross flew right across the Reds’ six yard box.
Steven Gerrard then dragged a 20 yarder just wide before Pepe Reina was forced to make his first save of note when he dived full length to keep out Luka Modric’s rasping effort.
Harry Redknapp was obviously unimpressed by what he had seen in the first 45 as he made a double substitution at the interval and it almost paid immediate dividends with Roman Pavlyuchenko crashing a long range shot inches wide with his first touch.
It was to be a brief riposte for the hosts who then managed to survive an onslaught in which Liverpool somehow failed to double their advantage.
First Gerrard was left cursing his luck on 50 minutes when great play by Kuyt saw the converted wide man tee up his skipper, but his deflected shot thumped back off the post.
The inspirational midfielder certainly had the bit between his teeth and just seconds later he was once again wearing an exasperated expression on his face as his ingenious clipped effort bounced on top of the bar.
Kuyt then slid a six-yard effort over following a low cross from Alvaro Arbeloa before Xabi Alonso contrived to head a Gerrard free-kick past the post from point blank range.
It was one-way traffic and when Alonso drilled another shot just wide it looked inevitable that Liverpool would be made to pay for their profligacy.
And so it proved on 68 minutes when a right-wing corner brushed off the head of Jamie Carragher and into the far corner of Reina’s net.
The Reds pushed forward in the closing moments as they looked to make it three successive league victories at White Hart Lane for the first time in their history.
But it wasn’t to be and they were left to stomach an undeserved defeat when Pavlyuchenko steered home in the 90th minute.

BENITEZ REFLECTS ON ‘RAFALUTION’

Rafa Benitez today reflected on the progression of his team over the last four years as Liverpool travel to the stadium where he took charge of his first Premier League game.
Of the 11 players who started against Spurs four years ago, just three are still at Anfield — Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia.
Benitez has allowed 37 senior players to walk through the Kop exit in an attempt to make the Reds genuine title contenders – a goal which, thanks to victories over Manchester United and Chelsea, looks close to being achieved.
Now, as Liverpool look to maintain their three-point lead at the top against Tottenham this afternoon, Benitez admits the so-called Rafalution has taken longer than he initially expected.
He explained: «It’s clear the squad is getting better every year, and that’s why I’m signing players all the time.
«I didn’t know there were just three players left from that first game. But it puts into perspective that we are improving.
«I think this is the best squad we’ve had during my time here, but hopefully in the next few years it can get better.
«To be contenders, you need quality, desire, passion, character — all those things together. That’s the reason you need to change players.
«Little by little we are getting there. Agger has almost everything you would want; Mascherano, Skrtel, Reina, Alonso — these are all players that we’ve brought in who give us those qualities and can guarantee they will perform in the Premier League, as well as the other competitions.»
But Benitez added: «When you arrive to a new league, you have a lot of confidence and you think that maybe in a few years you can change everything.
«But then you see the Premier League is very difficult. And when you know that you need to change your squad to be contenders, then it has had to be done little by little.
«You can see the difference between that team against Spurs and the one we have now. We have always been improving. Sometimes you think you can do it in a few years, but maybe we’ve needed more time because the other teams have been improving as well.
«When we were being successful in Europe, everybody was talking about the Premier League, so we tried to sign players who could be settled down straight away, such as Pennant, Bellamy and Crouch.
«We knew we needed to improve and we were always taking steps to do that.»
The situation was somewhat different when Benitez took over at Valencia in 2001. The Mestalla outfit had reached successive Champions League finals and only some minor tinkering was required to replicate European success on a domestic scale.
«Hector Cuper (the previous Valencia manager) was doing a very good job, so we only needed to change three or four players,» said Benitez.
«When you have a very good team, you don’t need to sign too many players and just manage with the players that you have.»

Аггер: «Я готов вернуться»
Даниэль Аггер рассказал официальному сайту клуба, что после года, который он провёл в лазарете из-за травмы, он очень рад возвращению в первую команду Красных и хочет получать всё больше возможностей выходить на поле.

Главное результат…тем более игра была на Энфилде..
Судья вообще чудил. Две руки Ливерпуля в штрафной, две руки вблизи штрафной у Атлетико, падение Аггера в штрафной в самом начале. Пенальти не было, конечно, но, в целом, думаю, счет по игре, не хотелось бы больше таких матчей, особенно у себя дома. Аггер вообще красавец, лучший в матче, че там у него с пальцем, интересно, а то только вылечился и опять. Надеюсь, ничего серьезного.

Официальный сайт напоминает, что 28-летний игрок заработал пенальти на последних секундах поединка, после чего сам же его и реализовал, тем самым подарив своей команде ничью.
Очередной гол капитана стал вторым подряд «очковым» мячом капитана. Напомним, что неделей ранее Стиви Джи забил единственный гол в матче чемпионата Англии против «Портсмута», заработав для своей команды 3 очка.
